Summer school: Design of Archaeological Datasets Pisa 2015

Content: the course aims at providing students with an introduction to metadata design for archaeological datasets, with perspective content provided as case studies by the students. The school will consist of some introductory lectures followed by hands-on seminars in which the design is developed by the students with the supervision of ISTI experts and then collectively discussed.

Principles of Data and Conceptual modeling.  Web architecture, the semantic web, URL, XML

14.30 – 17.30 Analysis of the research questions and data by the participants
Wednesday 8th July
9.30 – 12.30 Modeling with the Resource Description Framework.

Objects and relationships, RDF Syntax.  Abstraction mechanisms and RDF schema.  RDF semantics, inferences, SPARQL

12.30 – 14.30 Lunch
14.30 – 17.30 Ontologies.

Definition and examples, the Ontology web language OWL 2, the ontology editor Protege

Thursday 9th July
9.30 – 12.30 Metadata schemas and standards for Archaeological and Architectural heritage.

Critical overview on metadata schemas and standards for CH documentation.

12.30 – 14.30 Lunch
14.30 – 17.30 Design of metadata for archaeological datasets: hands on session.

Each participant will be assisted in the design of metadata for his/her archaeological dataset

Friday 10th July
9.30 – 12.30 Linked Data.

Producing, consuming, publishing Linked Data.  Demonstration

12.30 – 14.30 Lunch
14.30 – 17.30 Lessons learned, questions and feedback from participants.
